What Are The Different Types of Tap Classes?

Tap dance is an exciting dance form that uses rhythm and syncopation. The rhythm and movement of tap are created by the metal taps on the heels and toes of a dancer’s shoes. The tap shoes transform the dancer into a percussive musician. There are two major styles of Tap dance. Rhythm (Jazz) Tap, which focuses on musicality and Broadway Tap, which focuses on dance. At The Dance Academy, we incorporate the two styles to create a well-balanced class for our dancers. Our classes focus on rhythm, musicality, coordination, and timing. All tap classes begin with a warm-up and progress through across the floor exercises and combinations in the center. At The Dance Academy, we teach the dancer to find rhythms and beats in their own bodies as well as in the music.

Here are the different types of Tap Classes we offer:

Beginning Tap (Ages 5-8) Wednesdays 3:30-4:15

Our beginner tap dancers learn the fundamental steps of tap dance. This includes learning tap terminology and developing the ability to maintain correct body placement. We instill proper tap technique through barre exercises, creative movement, and combinations in the center. This class is devoted to proper tap technique, teaching simple rhythms, and dancing to the beat of the music while staying together as a group.

Beginning/Intermediate Tap (Ages 9-12) Wednesdays 5:45-6:30

Our Beg/Int Tap classes work to continue developing the skills learned in Beginning Tap. This class will focus on clarity of sounds and increasing speed. The dancers will begin working on more complex rhythms while placing an emphasis on technique, body placement, dynamics, and musicality.

Teen Tap (Age 13+) Tuesdays 6:45-7:30

Our Teen Tap dancers will continue to develop the skills learned in Beg/Int Tap. The dancers will become challenged through various improvisational exercises and learning intricate rhythms. In this class, dancers will be asked to create their own rhythms, focus on clarity of sounds, increase speed, and develop their own style.
